On the classification of visual illusions

Abstract

The classification of visual illusions is an important step in the development of ideas of illusion phenomena. Although in series of works different methods of classifying visual illusions were proposed, this issue is still open. In this article contemporary works on this issue are analyzed; difficulties in classifying of various visual illusions are discussed. Additionally, advantages and disadvantages of the available classifications are considered. The author’s own version of the classification, based on the hypothesis of level organization of the illusion formation process, as well as the geterarchical character of this organization is proposed. The advantages of the proposed classification are discussed; experimental works which are in good agreement with the proposed model are analyzed.
