The relationship of values, identities and multicultural ideology among the Russians in the Krasnodar region: intergenerational analysis

Abstract

The currentstudy is aimed to compare values, identities and multicultural ideologyamong representatives of the Soviet and post-Soviet generations of the Russians living in the Krasnodar Region. The sample included 610 respondents aged 18 to 70 years. The Portrait Values Questionnaire Revised, the scales of ethnic, national and religious identities and the Multicultural Ideology Scale were applied. The data was analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance and regression analysis. The results showed intergenerational gapsin the values of Openness to change, Self-Enhancement and Conservation. The values of Self-Transcendence led the value hierarchy among representatives of both generations. Remaining values differedas follows: among the representatives of the post-Soviet generation Openness to change values were in second place, then Self-Enhancement values, Conservation values; for the Soviet generation, Conservation values were in second place, followed by Openness to change and Self-Enhancement values. Intergenerational differences were also identified among identities: national identity was more important for the post-Soviet generation, while ethnic identity – for the Soviet generation. The attitude towards maintaining the multicultural ideology was more significant forthe post-Soviet generation. For this generation the attitude towards maintaining the multicultural ideology was predicted by Openness to Change values, Conservation values, Self-Transcendence values, ethnic and national identities. Among the representatives of the Soviet generation, the attitude was positively associated with Self-Transcendence values and negatively related to Self-Enhancement values.
