Implicit coordination and team work

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of implicit coordination, its role in team performance, and its relationship with team effectiveness. It reviews the history of research on this phenomenon, discusses the main elements of its structure, and distinguishes implicit coordination from explicit coordination and covering behavior. The article outlines the primary mechanisms underlying implicit coordination, including team mental models, team situational models, and the team's transactive memory system. Finally, it identifies the main challenges in researching implicit coordination and suggests potential directions for further study of this phenomenon.
