Creative potential of artists: an investigation of the relationship with introversion-extroversion

In this study, we examine the relationship between creativity and the personality trait—introversion-extraversion. The central research question concerns how introversion–extraversion is related to creative thinking abilities, particularly in the context of creative professions. Previous research in other occupational domains has identified an inverse U-shaped relationship between introversion–extraversion and creativity [Gao et al., 2020]. We hypothesized that a similar U-shaped relationship would be observed among artists. To test this hypothesis, we employed E.P. Torrance’s creative thinking tests and G.Yu. Eysenck’s personality inventory.
Introversion–extraversion was conceptualized as a continuous dimension ranging from pronounced introversion to pronounced extraversion. Participants were divided into two groups: those exhibiting pronounced to average levels of introversion (introverts) and those with average to high levels of extraversion (extraverts). Regression analysis confirmed the hypothesized inverse U-shaped relationship between introversion–extraversion and creativity. In the introvert group, no statistically significant correlation was found between introversion and overall creativity. Further analysis of specific creativity parameters revealed different patterns of association within each group: introverts exhibited mixed (divergent) relationships between individual creativity parameters and total creativity scores, while extraverts demonstrated cumulative effects. These opposing dynamics in the introvert group may account for the lack of statistical significance in the relationship between overall creativity and introversion–extraversion.
