Abstract

The article examines the structure and content of the world-renowned fundamental psychological concept developed by P. Ya. Galperin. Distinctions are made between the holistic concept ("Psychological characteristic of the psyche and the subject of psychology; (2) the doctrine of the evolution of the human psyche, phylogenesis, anthropogenesis and ontogenesis as components of the system of P. Ya. Galperin") and its most famous part ("The theory of systematically staged formation of mental actions and concepts"). Galperin’s system of psychological views consists of four interrelated parts: (1) the doctrine of orienting activity as the essential characteristic of the psyche and the subject matter of psychology; (2) the doctrine of the evolution of the human psyche, including phylogenesis, anthropogenesis, and ontogenesis, as integral components of the evolutionary process; (3) the doctrine of the formation of human mental activity; and (4) the doctrine of the types and forms of mental (orienting) activity. The paper briefly outlines the core content of each of these components. Special attention is devoted to a question that has remained in the focus of researchers and practitioners for more than half a century: Why has the theory of the planned, stage-by-stage formation of mental actions not been more widely applied in educational practice, despite consistent empirical evidence of its effectiveness – such as reductions in learning time and improvements in learning quality?
