The research focuses on identifying predictors of subjective well-being among Omsk students, a population group that plays an important role in the socio-economic and cultural development of the region. The methodological framework is based on Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. The study examines constructs that characterize young people’s involvement in social communities at different levels: the country (patriotic behavior), the city of residence (city attachment), and the educational organization where students receive professional training (university identification).
The aim of the research is to determine the contribution of patriotic behavior, city attachment, and university identification to predicting the components of subjective well-being among Omsk students. The novelty of the study lies in its comprehensive approach, which simultaneously considers these socio-psychological predictors from different ecological levels in relation to youth subjective well-being.
The sample consisted of 839 students from various Omsk universities: 504 (60.1%) were female and 335 (39.9%) male; the average age was 19.7 ± 2.4 years. Research methods included the questionnaire for assessing types of patriotic behavior by O.V. Gordyakova and A.N. Lebedev; the “Psychological Well-Being Spectrum” questionnaire by C. Keyes, adapted by E. Osin and D.A. Leontiev; the “Organizational Identification Scale” by B. Ashforth and F. Mael, adapted by Yu. Lipponen and modified for assessing identification with an educational organization; and the “City Attachment Questionnaire” by Yu.V. Potapova, A.Yu. Malenova, and A.A. Malenov.
The results showed that the strongest relationship with students’ subjective well-being was associated with patriotic behavior (positive for ideological patriotism and negative for problematic and conformist types). A statistically significant but less strong relationship was found between subjective well-being and city attachment as well as university identification. Universal predictors for the emotional, social, and psychological components of subjective well-being were the problematic type of patriotic behavior, involvement in the city, and identification with the city. All these variables were lower among students in socio-humanitarian fields and higher among students actively engaged in extracurricular activities at the university.
