Abstract

Background and aim. The article presents the results of an experimental study examining the effects of actual and mental motor training on problem solving within the framework of embodied cognition. Methods. To test the hypothesis concerning the mechanisms underlying the influence of motor training on problem solving, the study used Luchins’ water jar problem in the modification proposed by Werner and Raab. Participants were divided into three groups: in the first group, they performed actual motor training relevant to the task solution; in the second group, they mentally simulated movements relevant to solving the task; and in the third group, they performed irrelevant motor training. Results. The experimental results showed that actual motor training significantly affected task solution time, whereas mental motor training did not produce such an effect. Conclusions. Possible psychological mechanisms underlying these effects are discussed. The findings contribute to understanding the relationship between motor activity and cognitive processes and highlight the need for further research aimed at clarifying the psychological mechanisms through which motor training influences problem solving.
