This article presents an extended biographical account of John Widdup Berry (b. 1939), one of the founding figures of cross-cultural psychology. It outlines the key stages of his life and academic career, including his early experiences in the multicultural environment of Québec and his work in Africa and the Arctic, both of which significantly shaped his scientific perspective. Particular attention is devoted to two major areas of his scholarship: the ecocultural approach, which links ecological context with cultural practices and individual behavior, and acculturation theory, including the development of the fourfold model of acculturation strategies and the concept of acculturative stress. The article also examines Berry’s contribution to international scientific collaboration, educational programs, and multiculturalism-related social policy. In addition, it provides a concise overview of his principal theoretical and methodological ideas, the major lines of criticism directed at his work, and recurring cases of inaccurate interpretation and misreading of specific aspects of his models in subsequent scholarship. The article is based primarily on personal communication with John W. Berry and is supplemented by analysis of his published works and academic records documenting his scholarly contributions.
