Abstract

Social exclusion is a form of microaggressive behavior in which an individual or group, consciously or unconsciously, engages in destructive communicative practices such as ignoring, devaluing, and rejecting others. In such situations, the initiator of exclusion blocks the satisfaction of the victim’s basic psychological and social needs. Victims of social exclusion experience losses in self-esteem and social reputation, are deprived of meaningful interpersonal relationships and social status within a group, lose their sense of control over life circumstances, and may ultimately experience a loss of meaning in life. The experience of social exclusion is associated with suffering and pain comparable to physical pain, yet subjectively experienced as more intense and prolonged.
