The limbic system is a structural and functional network within the nervous system that provides the physiological basis for the manifestation of the most fundamental emotions in humans and animals, as well as for the emotional modulation of behavior associated with vital functions and adaptive responses to both the physical and social environment. The article outlines the historical development of contemporary concepts of the limbic system, the principal methods and major findings of its investigation, the leading theoretical models explaining emotional behavior based on the functions of its components, and the most extensively studied psychological disorders associated with dysfunctions of the components of this system or of the connections between them.
