The article examines the concept and foundational understandings of frustration from a historical perspective, including the similarities and differences between frustration, anger, and cognitive dissonance as responses to obstacles. It describes the earliest experimental studies of frustration conducted in T. Dembo’s dissertation research, which identified the specific characteristics of the frustration state in terms of its conditions and determinants, psychological mechanisms of emergence and development, and possible forms of resolution. The article further presents the types of frustration, patterns of reaction, and coping responses proposed by S. Rosenzweig, developed on the basis of the original studies conducted within K. Lewin’s laboratory and aimed at the applied diagnostic assessment of individual differences in responses to frustration. Finally, several representative contemporary studies of motivational disruption are analyzed. The conceptualization of frustration presented in this article is shown to provide explanatory and predictive value regarding participants’ reactions, thereby offering possibilities for their modification within applied psychological practice.
