Mental trauma

The article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of psychological trauma and the evolution of approaches to its study. It outlines the history of scientific research on psychological trauma from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The development of psychological trauma research within Russian science is also examined. The article considers various approaches to the classification of traumatic events and situations in relation to different groups of trauma-related consequences. Descriptions are proposed for the stages in the development of psychological trauma following both acute traumatic events and prolonged exposure to traumatic situations. The authors also evaluate factors operating before, during, and after a traumatic event that influence the individual’s ability to cope with and process the experience. Special attention is devoted to the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The article may be useful both for researchers investigating issues related to psychological trauma and for practicing psychologists and psychotherapists working with trauma survivors.
