Abstract

Burnout is a state of exhaustion accompanied by a tendency to avoid emotional involvement, resulting from the complete or partial depletion of energy resources necessary for the effective performance of professional duties or functions. Burnout is commonly conceptualized as a syndrome comprising three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The term was introduced into scientific discourse in 1974 by the American psychiatrist H. J. Freudenberger. In the ICD-11, burnout is classified under code QD85 and conceptualized as a consequence of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
