Self-compassion in the context of suicidal tendencies: the cut-off scores for the Self-Compassion Scale by K. Neff

Abstract

In the current study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Russian-language version of the Self-Compassion Scale by K. Neff. We also aimed to establish the cut-off scores for this scale with regard to suicidal risk. The normative sample comprised 490 university students, and the clinical sample consisted of 146 crisis center patients who reported suicidal ideation. A modern test theory model for rating scales was employed to validate the structure of the questionnaire and to establish threshold values. It was found that the Self-Compassion Scale is most effectively used and interpreted through its six subscales and two factors – 'positive' and 'negative' self-attitude. This instrument provides reliable and valid results, and the cut-off scores allow for the use of this scale in screenings and in clinical settings to identify suicide risk among youth.
