The phenomenon of social status in the contemporary Russian society

Abstract

In this article, the concept of social status is analyzed from two perspectives: as a phenomenon of society and social-psychological characteristics of personality which is defined in a situation of acquainting. In this study, the social representations and the connections between its elements were identified; furthermore, the images of typical representatives of the different statuses were studied. In addition, there were found the peculiar properties of the process of social status perception, its significant aspects and factors. A conceptual model of the stranger’s social status identification was built. In total, the study involved 358 respondents.
