Motivational antecedents of giftedness: from Renzulli’s model towards integrative model of motivation

Abstract

The structural-dynamic motivational model of giftedness which further develops the motivation component of Renzulli’s three-ring model is presented. The motivational model consists of four basic clusters of motivation that are essential for manifestation and development of giftedness. Functions of each cluster and its interaction with other components of the structure are considered. The following components: intrinsic motivation of selected activity which manifests as high cognitive motivation, achievement motivation and personal growth motivation; striving for independent setting of difficult and future-oriented goals and urge towards their achievement; optimistic self-belief and high concentration and persistence in doing selected activity are identified. The first three components are the main sources that trigger the forth key characteristic of the gifted – productive concentration and persistence in selected area. The proposed structure provides a basis for complex diagnostics of potentially gifted children and adolescents as well as for educational programs development.
