Psychological paradoxes of individual and social development in a multicultural society [Special issue]

As usual, this issue is formed on the base of dialogues at the annual Shpetovskuh readings. Their theme this year was "Psychological paradoxes of individual and social development in a multicultural society." It seems to us that the answers to the questions of the correlation of the individual and the social in a modern transitive, multicultural society can be found, in particular, in the works of G.G. Shpet on ethnic psychology and internal form of the word. This possibility was proved by using the concept of an internal form in the analysis of the psychological chronotope.

In general, the subjects of the articles focuse on the problems of acculturation of emigrants in new sociocultural conditions, values and standards, constantly changing and varying the correlation and content of the social and individual development contexts.

The discussion began with a very interesting report by A.N.Poddyakov, which was already mentioned on the page of issue in FB. The question of whether it is necessary to re-educate emigrants to new values is touched in the content of many articles, without finding, that is natural, an unambiguous answer. At the same time, the discrepancy between values and stereotypes concerns literally all aspects of the social and individual development context - from the notions about heroes, ideas about the future, stereotypes of old age. Therefore, more and more relevant are various areas, including the notion of culture as one of the leading determinants of the development of the psyche.

In general, the authors are fascinatingly and polemically revealing the positive and negative aspects of personality development in today's multicultural space, showing new trends in the study of a multicultural society.

Cultural-historical paradigm in modern science [Special issue]

This issue is created on the base of discussions on annual Shpetovskoj conference which was devoted to a problem a cultural - historical paradigm in modern science. Proceeding from it, the subject of articles is focused on questions of borders of this paradigm and its options in theoretical and empirical researches, including the history and philosophy of science and cross-cultural works.

As A.G.Asmolov fairly emphasized, that culture resists to barbarity which levels a variety and identity. Therefore the questions connected with development of the personality, consciousness and self-determination of people in complex systems, in a situation of diversity and transitive society became a keynote for many articles. No least important became the problem of connections between people of different cultures, different mentality, the specifics of behavior, the regulation of activities in various living conditions, various attitude to the world, personal status and wellbeing.

In general, authors reveal actual and potential opportunities of cultural- historical paradigm in different areas of knowledge and in different historical and cultural contexts, once again convincingly proving that the force of modern methodology in the openness of different theoretical and empirical constructs and their capability to transformation.

    Dark Triad

In 2002, Canadian researchers Delroy L. Paulhus and Kevin M. Williams proposed viewing three personality traits that have been traditionally studied in psychology – Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy – as a single constellation that they dubbed the Dark Triad.  Paulhus and Williams considered the three traits of the Dark Triad to be independent constructs that, despite certain overlap, are distinct and complementary, presenting as different patterns of socially undesirable behavior such as violation of social norms, inability to maintain long-term relationships, cynicism, misanthropy, lack of empathy, duplicity, deceptiveness, exploitation of others, etc.

The popularity of the Dark Triad concept hasn’t just made it the subject of numerous studies.  The large number of meta-analyses that have been conducted to review empirical data on the Dark Triad is also extraordinary for the relatively short period of 13 years.  Furthermore, one of the two keynote speeches at the 2015 conference of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences focused on the Dark Triad.

This issue of Psychological Studies presents the results of empirical research on the Dark Triad that highlights a Dark Triad measure validated for the Russian population and addresses age dynamics in Dark Triad traits, as well as some of their relations with certain psychological dimensions.  We hope that research on "dark" attributes of personality will spark the interest of psychologists and fuel new studies.

Psychology in the transitive world [Special issue]

During the last time we repeatedly address to methodological and investigating problems which are connected with a new situation of science development, new challenges of the present. Transitivity concerns not only variability and uncertainty of society and/or science, it is also a state of mind, mentalities of our contemporaries around the world. Therefore it is so important for psychology not only to realize, reflect methodologically a new situation, but also to find new, adequate methods for studying the happening changes in all spheres of life.

In this issue various articles - from studying language norm’s transformations to investigation of brain mechanism’s dynamics, from the analysis of cognitive and clinical paradigms to reflection of existential and philosophical psychology are collected. Unites these papers the aspiration to analyze and explain the occurring difficult phenomena, without simplifying, but also without dramatizing them. Therefore the position that only understanding of yourself and people around, existential identity are capable to compensate social transitivity becomes more and more important.

No less important is empirical studying of new phenomenology of socialization, copping, Internet communication, social knowledge, and reflection ratio of different paradigms and constructs in new methodology. At the same time the psychology of the present demands also understanding of the way passed by psychological science, various options of its development, and also incorporation of ideas and achievements (and even mistakes) of the past to the present.

Problem of social space: Interdisciplinary approach [Special issue]

The problem of social space is rather an old and developed subject for the humanities but a comparatively new subject for psychology. Today there is neither settled understanding of the content of the concept of social space, nor clarity in using terminology which is taken from such areas related to psychology as philosophy, sociology, culturology… Thus, the borders of this construct are vague and mobile especially as in addition to objective, physical and economic space it includes cultural and informational space as well as personal space considered as a result of internalization of social norms and requirements, attitudes and representations. At the moment, the content of social space also includes “time-continuum” both in its objective and subjective variants. All these constituents vary permanently and the relevant changes either synchronize and harmonize, or bring disharmony in the structure of this complex construct.

The articles collected in this volume are an attempt to determine main directions in studies of social space and to present materials of modern studies in different areas of psychological science. We hope that these thoughts and reflections will be of interest to our readers.
