Ethnic identity peculiarities in primary schoolers and teenagers of different nationalities who live in a megacity

Abstract

The results of empirical study of personal and ethnic identity peculiarities in primary schoolers and teenagers who live in close interethnic and multicultural interaction of a megacity (Moscow) are presented. Children and teenagers of different nationalities including Russians, Armenians, Georgians, Tatars, Azerbaidjanians, Abkhazians, Ukrainians and Jews (80 subjects altogether) were examined. It is shown that consciousness of ethnicity and ethnic self-identification are determined by family values and ethnocultural norms as well as by peers’ interethnic interaction.
