Mixed methods of research in the light of the ideal of postnonclassical rationality

Abstract

Mixed methods and methodology in psychology and social sciences are considered. Conceptual framework of cultural-analytical approach allows us to represent elaboration of mixed research strategies in connection with development of the postnonclassical ideal of rationality in science and ideas of methodological liberalism and pluralism. The logic of science is manifested in movement from pure research lines to the mixed ones, from canons to improvisations, combination of scientific genres and scientific styles play. It is argued that mixed methods and methodologies are a particular case of multi-paradigmality (paradigm pluralism) as a principle of postnonclassical science. The problems of integration of scientific knowledge in this cognitive situation are discussed. It is suggested that intellectual isolationism is the brake to development of Russian psychology and that it is the postnonclassical ideal of rationality depriving the classical heritage and the trustworthiness of the canonical aureole that relieves psychological science for development. The paradox of the postnonclassical ideal of rationality manifests itself in the fact that the waiver of subject boundaries protection strengthens research positions, supports diversity (multeity) and makes scientific development more sustainable.
