Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the currently evolving field of cognitive studies, which investigates enduring forms of representations—intuitive theories—pertaining to diverse subjects and phenomena. Here we analyze the primary models within this domain: the "theory-theory" and the "knowledge-in-pieces". The development of models of ontogenesis of representations about various phenomena of reality is discussed within the framework of the theory of conceptual changes. Empirical evidence is presented, both substantiating and challenging various approaches. The current state of research as well as prospective research directions are considered.
