This article examines theoretical approaches to the problem of intercultural communication, developed in response of increasing heterogeneity of modern society are analyzed. These approaches are searching the ways of minimizing uncertainty of interpersonal and between-group contacts with other cultures. Several groups created from a Western perspective are analysed. They are:  theories focusing on 1) identity; 2) adaptation; 3) the result of interaction; 4) the development of cultural competence; and 5) an integrative theory. The authors investigate the limitations which exist in this field of knowledge, related to the ignorance of principles of personality and group psychology.
